There are four lifting 'bascule' bridges between Puget Sound and Lake Washington. If your mast is higher than 46 feet, you need to signal to an operator with a series of horns, so that the bridges are raised as you approach. This stops traffic. It is a drag for both boaters and commuters. Avoiding the bascule bridges was a major motivation for my move to a marina in Puget Sound. Here we see the University Bridge and I-5 in the foreground.
